13-year-old Binford Middle School student killed in ‘accidental’ shooting in Richmond neighborhood

Richmond’s Southside witnessed what appears to be an accidental shooting, leading to the death of a 13-year-old boy, as confirmed by the city’s mayor, who called for an investigation.

Officials from Richmond Police responded to a person down call on the 1600 block of Stockton Street in the Blackwell neighborhood, just before 9:55 pm on Friday.

Upon arrival, they found a young male with an apparent gunshot wound, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

While the police are not actively searching for any suspects at the moment, the medical examiner will investigate the precise cause of death.

Mayor Levar Stoney expressed his condolences to the grieving family and urged gun owners to take responsibility by securing their firearms, stating that too many easily accessible guns in the community often result in tragic incidents like this.

The police have not provided any details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.

However, in a message to the members of the Richmond School Board, Jason Kamras, the Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools, confirmed that the victim was a seventh-grade student at Binford Middle School.

Kamras also shared that three other students from Richmond Public Schools were injured in separate shooting incidents that took place on Friday night.

He added that the school administration is taking steps to support the affected students and staff, and requested everyone to keep the families and school communities of the victims in their thoughts and prayers.
