17-year-old male juvenile arrested for shooting Felipe Cantu on Lake Boulevard

Following the shooting, both fled the scene in opposite directions.

On Sunday, March 12th, 2023, at 2:32 P.M., Redding Police Department officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots fired in the 1000 block of Lake Blvd. As officers arrived in the area shots were reportedly fired, a victim of a gunshot wound arrived at a local hospital. The Victim, 21-year-old Felipe Cantu of Cottonwood, is currently being treated for a gunshot wound to his chest and is expected to survive. Cantu was not forthcoming with detectives as to what had occurred.

Officers located the crime scene on the sidewalk in front of the Kennett Court Apts., located at 1081 Lake Blvd. Officers found multiple ammunition casings on the sidewalk, two parked vehicles struck by gunfire, as well as video surveillance which captured the incident.

The video depicts Cantu and a male suspect involved in a confrontation on the sidewalk, resulting in the suspect drawing a black handgun and firing several rounds in Cantu’s direction.

Following the shooting, both fled the scene in opposite directions.

Detectives were ultimately able to identify a 17-year-old male juvenile as the suspected shooter. The juvenile will not be identified at this time. As detectives were developing leads on the juvenile’s whereabouts, his aunt called Shascom911 Dispatch to advise she was driving him to the Redding Police Department to turn himself in.

The juvenile was apprehended in the RPD parking lot without incident.

The 17-year-old was booked at the Shasta County Juvenile Hall for attempted murder with a firearm, and assault with a firearm.

Detectives have not been able to determine why this conformation occurred and the firearm use has not been located. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Redding Police Department at 530-225-4200.
