21-year-old Garrett Hughes killed in shooting at Searstown parking lot

Upon arrival, police found a person who had been shot.

Garrett Hughes, 21, of Key West, died after being shot early Monday in a lot off North Roosevelt Boulevard, police said.

On Feb. 13, at 12:28am, Key West Police officers were dispatched to a shooting in the Searstown parking lot.

Upon arrival, police found a person who had been shot.

Officers began assisting with lifesaving measures for the victim and immediately detained the suspect who was still on scene,” police said in a press release Monday.

Officers recovered the firearm that was used and secured the scene.

The victim was transported to the Lower Keys Medical Center by Key West Fire Rescue, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after.

The scene was secured for several hours while KWPD detectives responded and took over the investigation.

The suspect Lloyd “Preston” Brewer was transported to the police station, interviewed and arrested; charges are pending as the investigation is still ongoing.
