FOX3 has discovered that a 23-year-old LSU nursing student from New Orleans was shot and killed Friday night while visiting the Caribbean nation of Belize.

An LSU nursing student from New Orleans was tragically murdered in the Central American nation of Belize on Friday (30 December).

J’Bria Michelle Bowens, 23 years old, was determined to be the student who was involved in the incident. In May, Bowens received her degree from Xavier University, and as of last month, her Facebook page indicated that she was continuing her education at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where she was working toward a nursing degree.

It is believed that Bowens was celebrating his birthday on the island of San Pedro in Belize with members of his family when he was injured by gunfire outside of the Jaguars nightclub in San Pedro’s Central Park, according to the authorities. When she was brought to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, which was where she was transported for treatment, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

At approximately 9:27 p.m., the Police Commissioner Chester Williams told FOX3 that it appeared as though Bowens was shot as an unintended target by a gunman who fired indiscriminately with an assault-style rifle toward another person who was standing by the entrance to the nightclub. Bowens was struck and killed by one of the bullets. Williams stated that the intended target was considered to be a leading member of a local drug-selling gang and was being sought for questioning. Williams added that the intended target was being pursued for further investigation. According to Williams, additional people were detained for the purpose of conducting an investigation.

The unnamed gunman reportedly fired more than a dozen shots into the gathering, as reported by the local newspaper, the San Pedro Sun. There were no reports of any further injuries.
