Brett Cameron Carter, a 34-year-old resident of Sweeney, Texas, was identified as the suspect in an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, March 2.
According to officials, the incident began at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday when police and Lake Jackson EMS received a call about a man who was found in a dumpster on the property of OM Roberts Elementary School.
However, before the authorities arrived, the man, identified as Carter, allegedly stole a nearby truck, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, Carter is said to have rammed a police vehicle and attempted to run over an officer.
The Texas DPS then deployed spikes near CR 192 and CR 193, causing Carter to crash. As officers approached to check on him, he exited the vehicle and reportedly charged at two officers with a large blade.
As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, with one having over 30 years of experience in law enforcement and the other having three years.
While certain details cannot be discussed at this time, the Lake Jackson Police Department is committed to transparency and is working closely with other law enforcement agencies.
Police Chief Paul Kibodeaux stated that the department is sharing a still image from one of the officer’s bodycam footage to maintain transparency and accountability to the public.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the case, and once they complete their work, the District Attorney will present the case to the grand jury in Brazoria County.
The image shared shows Carter exiting a truck while holding a large knife and facing the officers, and the events that occurred before and after are currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
