Amber Smith and Riley Noble lost two of their children, Riley Jr., 6, and Nevaeh, 4, as they tried to get to safety during the flash flood in Kentucky, Amber’s cousin Brittany Trejo said.
Trejo stated that she assisted in the search for two of the children in the Montgomery neighborhood of Knott County on Friday morning and was at the funeral home when the other two were identified on Thursday.
Shane Goodall, a spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police, acknowledged a complaint of four missing children on Thursday night, but said he lacked specific details.
Thursday night, Knott County Coroner Corey Watson declined to comment on the four youngsters, but acknowledged that seven people had perished in the county’s flood.
Governor Andy Beshear anticipated that the number of deaths in the state would be in the “double digits,” but eight deaths were confirmed. His aides refused to comment on additional deaths on Thursday night, but he will provide an update on Friday, they added.
According to Trejo, on Thursday the residence of Amber Smith and Riley Noble, located in the Montgomery hamlet, became flooded with water.
They climbed up onto the roof, and the entire area underneath them was swept away along with the children. They were able to go to a tree and hold the youngsters for a few hours before a large tide swept in and washed them all away at the same time, according to Trejo.
Trejo reported that the mother and father were trapped in the tree for a period of eight hours before anyone arrived to offer assistance.
The mother and father, Amber Smith and Riley Noble, were found alive. Trejo stated that the bodies of Riley Jr., age 6, and Nevaeh Noble, age 4, were recovered.
The parents are still looking for their 8-year-old daughter, Maddison, and their 18-month-old son, Chance.
Even though there is no official number, it is thought that many Kentuckians are missing because their homes were destroyed.
Goodall proceeded by stating that police were still rescuing individuals using helicopters in inaccessible locations.
