On March 10, 2023, at around 5:10 p.m., Bloomington Police Department officers received a 911 call reporting that a man at a residence on N Kingsley Drive was armed with a handgun and holding hostages inside.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers spoke to a juvenile complainant who had fled the residence and reported that the man was intoxicated and threatening to kill individuals with the handgun.

Due to the gravity of the situation, the Critical Incident Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were deployed to the scene.

A Crisis Negotiator made contact with the man via FaceTime and observed that he was holding a handgun and threatening to kill a hostage and officers.

Despite efforts by the Crisis Negotiator to de-escalate the situation, the man refused to release the hostage or surrender the gun.

At 6:31 p.m., while still in communication with the Crisis Negotiator, the 46-year-old man shot himself in the kitchen of the residence, and the 76-year-old hostage managed to escape to safety.

No other individuals were injured during the incident.

The Monroe County Coroner took possession of the body, and the investigation is ongoing.
