78-year-old Roy Streat killed in an officer-involved shooting in Nicholls, Coffee County
This marks the 17th officer-involved shooting in 2023 that the GBI has been called upon to investigate.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an investigation into a shooting involving an officer in Nicholls, Coffee County, GA, where one man was shot and killed.
On March 6, 2023, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office requested an independent investigation by the GBI.
According to preliminary information, the Nicholls Police Department was alerted that a man had pointed a gun at a city employee and was walking down the road while carrying the weapon.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officer found Roy Streat, a 78-year-old man, at the intersection of Johnson Street and Brunswick Avenue with a gun. Streat declined to put down the weapon, and the officer unsuccessfully attempted to subdue him using a taser before ultimately shooting him.
Streat was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation, and upon completion, the case file will be submitted to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
