After receiving multiple reports of shots being fired from within the hospital early on Saturday morning, the Metro Nashville Police Department responded to a report of an active shooter at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown.
The security personnel reported that they heard two bullets fired from within a stairwell, and the suspect was now on the fourth level of the stairs after entering the hospital through a back door.
Nicholas Zaayenga, 33 years old, was eventually brought into custody after being spotted and accosted by law enforcement officers.
Zaayenga was recognized as the suspect.
He was armed, had many magazines of ammo on him, and was firing at an internal door when he was found.
When he was found, he had been firing at the door. In the same general location, there were several spent gunshot casings found.
Nicholas Perre Zaayenga, a resident of Austin, Texas, was arrested and placed into the Metro Nashville Jail on several charges, including criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment/assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and possession of a weapon in an area where it is prohibited by a notice.
A judicial commissioner decided the appropriate amount for his bond to be $77,000.
