The Rocky Mount police held an update regarding yesterday’s separate incidents, including an officer-involved shooting at Oakwood.
Chief Hassell stated that two officers were attempting to arrest Antonio Wilkins Sr., who had stolen a car from the Whitakers area.
Wilkins resisted arrest and pulled out a handgun, firing multiple shots at the officers, hitting one of their weapon holsters.
In response, one of the officers shot Wilkins in the leg, and he is currently in stable condition in the hospital.
Wilkins will be charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The officers involved in the shooting, Sergeant C. Joyner and Corporal V. Hussey, have been placed on administrative leave as per protocol, while the SBI investigates the incident.
