An assailant attacked Salman Rushdie by rushing the stage and then “punching and stabbing” the author many times in front of terrified onlookers at a literary festival in Chautauqua, New York, near Buffalo.

Author Salman Rushdie could not survive the stab wounds due to loss of blood, a hospital source just confirmed.

On Friday, the author was reportedly attacked while giving a speech at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater in western New York.

Eyewitnesses stated that the author Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed on Friday during an event in the state of New York, sustained “ten to fifteen” blows as a result of the attack. One of them admitted that at first she considered it to be “a stunt.”

Rabbi Charles Savenor, who was in the audience for the speech at Chautauqua Institution, almost 100 kilometers from the city, claimed, “This person jumped onto the platform and began beating Mr. Rushdie.”

The perpetrator “punched or stabbed Mr. Rushdie 10 to 15 times,” according to an AP reporter.

“Initially, you wonder, “What’s going on?” In a few seconds, it became immediately evident that he was being beaten “Mr. Savenor informed the media outlet. According to him, the onslaught lasted approximately twenty seconds.

Kathleen Jones, a member of the crowd, stated that the attacker wore a black mask and black clothing. “We suspected it was part of a ruse to demonstrate that there is still much debate about this author. “However, it became clear within a few seconds that this was not the case,” she was reported as adding.

Mr. Rushdie quickly dropped to the ground, and the attacker was detained. AP stated that a small group of people held up the author’s legs, apparently to send more blood to his chest.

The estimated 2,500 audience members, some of whom ran to the sage’s aid upon seeing the attack, were subsequently evacuated.

The New York State Police confirmed the stabbing and stated that Mr. Rushdie was transported by helicopter to a local hospital. The perpetrator has been apprehended, according to the police, who declined to provide any details.

While Mr. Rushdie was being introduced before to giving his speech, the attack took place at approximately 11 am local time (8:30 pm IST). The Chautauqua Institution, which can be found in a more rural area of New York, is famous for the lecture series that it hosts during the summertime. There has been a previous appearance by Mr. Rushdie there.
