A BRITISH man was shot dead at a Mexican supermarket alongside his two friends as his distraught parents say he was in “the wrong place at the wrong time”.
Cornwall-based software programmer Ben Corser, 37, was shot dead in Colima, Mexico, on Tuesday while picking up groceries.
Ben had been in the country since January. He and two friends, Claudio and Alfredo, were shot and killed while sitting in a car.
Andrew Corser and Lorraine Downes, who used to be headteachers, and Tom Corser, his brother, said he was in “the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“Ben had become a part of the Mexican community and was having a wonderful and sociable time,” the family’s heartbroken statement claimed.
According to them, Ben had been in Mexico since January 2022 and had been having a very good and social time, living in various regions of Mexico, becoming a part of the community, and also moving around a lot.
“Ben had been staying with a Mexican-American family near Colima city for the past few months. Claudio and Alfredo were skateboarders, and Ben joined in on the fun with the boys.
“On Tuesday, May 24th, 2022, Alfredo drove to Guadalajara to pick up Ben and Claudio once they arrived on the bus.
“They walked down Colima’s main avenue, stopping at a supermarket to get supplies for Mamma.
A gunman opened fire on the three young men, killing all three, including Ben who was in the rear seat.
Nobody has given us a reason for the disappearance of our loved ones, nor have we heard any rumors of robbery, kidnapping, or any other crime taking place.
There was a substantial uptick in crime in Colima in recent weeks, but it wasn’t geared at visitors at all.
Ben’s body will be brought back to the UK so that he can be laid to rest in St. Just, Cornwall.
Bertha Reynoso, a local reporter, said, “Engineer Ben Marshall Corser is the first foreigner to be killed in this wave of violence in Colima since January 25.”
