Update: 250 bypass at Hydraulic Rd. Will be closed for an extended period of time due to an officer-involved shooting. The suspect turned and pointed a firearm at several officers. Those officers engaged the suspect, striking him. The suspect is in critical condition and has been transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment. We will hold a press engagement on the one o’clock hour.
There is currently an ongoing violent incident involving a firearm in the area of Emmet St. near the Red Roof Inn in Charlottesville.
Charlottesville Police Department negotiators are currently negotiating with an armed individual who has fired several shots in the area.
Law enforcement officers are present at the scene, and it is advised that people avoid the area. Due to the severity of the situation, there will likely be a significant police presence.
Police received a report of the incident just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28th, and they have since set up a command post in the parking lot of the former Kmart and Golds Gym.
The Charlottesville City Police Department is receiving assistance from other law enforcement agencies in responding to the situation.
As a safety precaution, individuals are advised to avoid the area, while those already in the vicinity of Emmet St. and Route 250 Bypass are instructed to shelter in place.
