Chesapeake Sheriff Deputy Scott Chambers critically hurt, suspect dead after shooting at busy Hampton intersection

Wednesday at approximately 11:20 a.m., a call was received by the Hampton Police Department regarding the occurrence.

There was a stretch of police tape that had been erected along the crossroads of Big Bethel Road and Todds Lane, and it appeared like all traffic had come to a total halt there.

At this time, there are officers conducting patrols at the crossroads, which, according to the police, is anticipated to be blocked for “quite some time.”

Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot indicated during a press conference that followed the shooting that the shooting incident began as officers from the United States Marshals Task Force were chasing a car that they suspected had a suspect sought for a homicide.

The police would not comment on which homicide investigation the unidentified man was being investigated for. The identify of the suspect will not be revealed until the next-of-kin have been contacted, as stated in a news release issued by the Hampton Police Department. Officers from the task force were seeking to serve a warrant on the suspect during this time.

Officers from the Norfolk Police Department, the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, the Newport News Police Department, the Chesapeake Police Department, and the Hampton Police Division are all members of the United States Marshals Task Force.

The suspect is said to have stopped his vehicle at the crossroads of Big Bethel Road and Todds Lane, according to the police. According to Chief Talbot, the guy instantly got out of the car and started shooting at the task force police, who then started shooting back at him.

During the exchange of gunfire, both the suspect and an officer with the task team were hit multiple times by bullets. Both were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

At the hospital, it was determined that the suspect had passed away. The cop, whose name is Scott Chambers, is reportedly in extremely grave condition at this time. According to Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan, Chambers has been working for the sheriff’s office for four years and was given the responsibility of leading the task force one year ago.

Chambers was referred to by Sheriff Sullivan as “an extraordinary man,” and he begged the citizens of the town to keep him in their prayers.
