Structure fire reported at Petaluma Municipal Airport

At the Petaluma Municipal Airport on Monday morning, a fire and explosion caused the destruction of a hangar, a tiny private plane, and a vintage vehicle; however, no injuries were recorded from the incident.

According to Fire Chief Jeff Schach, crews from the Petaluma Fire Department responded to a report of the fire and explosion at 11:42 a.m. and were able to bring the fire under control by 11:58 a.m.

Schach said that by the time workers arrived, the hangar had been completely consumed by flames, but they were successful in stopping the fire from spreading to other nearby hangars.

The fire broke out immediately after the Piper Cub aircraft’s owner concluded a flight, parked the aircraft, and exited the hangar.

Schach stated, “He just finished flying it, and while he was away for a few minutes, an explosion occurred.”

In addition to the aircraft, the fire reportedly destroyed a classic Corvette.

The inquiry into the cause of the fire, which appears to have been accidental, is ongoing.
