Funeral procession for Robert Cunningham at the Potomac Avenue Metro station

Cunningham gave his life as he tried to wrestle a gun away from an active shooter.

Robert Cunningham, a Metro employee who lost his life while attempting to shield a woman during a shooting incident at the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, will be interred on Tuesday.

The funeral procession started at 12 p.m. at the Metro station where the event took place, after which mourners will proceed to the nearby Congressional Cemetery.

According to officials, the violent incident on February 1st began on a Metrobus and continued into the Metro station. Isaiah Trotman, a 31-year-old gunman, shot multiple people and threatened a woman until 64-year-old Cunningham intervened.

Trotman was arrested, but Cunningham passed away due to his injuries. Cunningham, a longtime mechanic in Metro’s power department, was called a “heroic employee” by officials who lowered flags in his honor.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support Cunningham’s family with expenses.
