A former governor of South Dakota has passed away.

According to Harvey Wollman’s son, who spoke with FOX3 on behalf of the family, the former governor of South Dakota passed away on Tuesday. Wollman was 87 years old when he passed away due to natural causes.

After Richard Kneip stepped down from his position as governor in 1978 to take up the position of United States Ambassador to Singapore, Wollman was sworn in as the new governor. His brother Roger Wollman, who was already serving in the role of Chief Justice, administered the oath of office to Wollman, who had previously served as Kneip’s deputy governor.

Wollman held the position of governor of South Dakota for a total of five months and was the final Democrat to hold the office.

An announcement on the funeral arrangements for Harvey will be made at a later time, according to a news statement about Wollman’s passing.

In November of 1978, Republican Bill Janklow defeated Democrat Roger McKellips, who had defeated Wollman in the Democratic primary for governor. Since then, South Dakotans have exclusively chosen Republicans to serve as governor.
