A grand jury has indicted Robert Crimo who is accused of opening fire during an Independence Day parade in a suburb of Chicago on 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated violence.

In the past, the prosecution has charged Robert E. Crimo III with seven separate counts of murder. On Wednesday, they revealed that the decision of the grand jury to indict him on 117 felony charges had been made.
The attorneys for Crimo have not yet provided a formal response to any of the charges he is facing in connection with the shooting that occurred on July Fourth in downtown Highland Park, Illinois. This shooting resulted in the deaths of seven people, injuries to more than 30, and caused parade spectators to flee the area.
Crimo, 21, is alleged to have confessed to the shooting when he was taken into custody by police on July 4, following a search that lasted for many hours.
Prosecutors in Illinois are permitted to submit questions to a grand jury in order to assess whether or not there is sufficient evidence to move forward with a trial. The hearings of the grand jury are closed to the public, and defense attorneys are not permitted to question witnesses during these proceedings.
According to the authorities, the injured range in age from 8 all the way up to their 80s, including a young kid of 8 years old whose spine was severed during the shooting and left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Police discovered the semi-automatic rifle used in the attack on the ground nearby, and more than 80 expended shot shells on the rooftop of a building along the parade route, according to Lake County prosecutors during a court hearing where the murder charges were announced.
To flee the scene, the alleged shooter mixed in with the throng, according to investigators. He then borrowed his mother’s car and briefly considered carrying out a second attack on a party in Madison, Wisconsin, before returning to Illinois and being apprehended by police.
