John Hao, who was injured in Michigan State University shooting, paralyzed from waist down

Friends of a victim of the Michigan State University shooting who is currently hospitalized are appealing to the public for assistance in meeting his medical expenses.

John Hao, a 20-year-old international student from China, was critically wounded when he was shot in the back during a class at Berkey Hall on Monday night, February 13.

According to his close friend and MSU roommate, Argen Qian, the victim is still receiving medical treatment.

Among the students who sustained critical injuries during the Michigan State University shooting that claimed the lives of three other students is John Hao.

After being in critical condition for the past five days, Hao was finally stabilized on Saturday, February 18th. His close friend and MSU roommate, Argen Qian, created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Hao’s medical bills.

Within four hours of the page’s launch, it had already raised over $131,000.

According to Qian, Hao was attending a class in Berkey Hall on Monday night when Anthony McRae, the shooter, entered from the back of the classroom and opened fire, injuring multiple people.

According to Argen Qian, John Hao suffered critical injuries during the Michigan State University shooting that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

The bullet penetrated his lungs and severed his spinal cord after striking him in the back. Hao’s parents, who flew in from China to be with their son, are facing significant financial strain due to the high cost of his medical treatment, and their inability to work in the United States due to the language barrier.

They cannot take Hao back to China with them either, as he requires ongoing medical care in the United States.

Qian fears that the medical insurance may not cover all of the expenses, and thus, they are requesting assistance through fundraising.

Hao has been able to communicate with only nods and shakes of his head due to the breathing tube that was placed in his throat. Hao and Qian became close friends after meeting through an international student text group chat three years ago.

They have lived together on campus for the last three years.

Qian is heartbroken about Hao’s condition and is appealing to the global MSU community to assist his “little brother” by contributing to the medical expenses and supporting his family.

All donations received will be utilized to pay for medical bills and any possible treatments that could aid in his recovery.
