Kenneth Santana-Rodriguez charged with murder in Holyoke Mall shooting

The shooting happened at the Touch of Beauty Hair and Nail Salon within the mall, and it happened after a confrontation between Santana-Rodriguez and another individual escalated, with a bystander victim being shot

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the Holyoke Police Department received numerous emergency calls concerning an active-shooter event occurring at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, 50 Holyoke Street, Holyoke.

Members of the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police responded to the scene and mounted a response accordingly.

Emergency calls to the Holyoke Police Department revealed that the shooting occurred at the Touch of Beauty Hair & Nail Salon within the mall.

Uniformed law enforcement officers were informed of an armed subject within the salon. Upon entering the salon officers encountered the subject who was taken into custody without incident, and in possession of a firearm.

The suspect, Kenneth Santana-Rodriguez, 23, of Springfield, was transported to the Holyoke Police Department and charged with: murder, and assault & battery with a dangerous weapon.

Entering the salon officers discovered an injured male who ultimately died on scene as a result of his injuries.

The deceased is believed to have been attending to the suspect and his party when another individual, who is known to the suspect, enters the salon. A confrontation between the suspect and this individual begins and quickly escalates into a shooting, leading to the victim being shot.

The identity of the deceased will be provided once proper family notification has occurred.

This is an active homicide investigation currently being conducted by the Holyoke Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden DA’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Homicide Unit.

Kenneth Santana-Rodriguez is expected to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court on Monday.
