Michigan State University gunman Anthony Dwayne McRae had note indicating threat to Ewing Public Schools

According to Ewing police, Anthony McCrae, the Michigan State gunman, carried a note in his pocket indicating a potential threat to two schools in Ewing.

However, upon further investigation, it was determined that the shooting was solely confined to Michigan, and there is no danger to Ewing.

Despite this, officers will be present at all Ewing schools for the day, but a regular schedule is expected for Wednesday, February 15th.

Early Tuesday morning, an unverified threat to the schools prompted the township to close all public schools. Nevertheless, law enforcement officials have since declared that there is no ongoing danger.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at approximately 0600 hours, The Ewing Police Department was notified by the New Jersey State Police about a mass shooting incident that occurred at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, which had a possible connection to Ewing, New Jersey.

Information received during the investigation indicated that the shooter (Anthony McRae, age 43) had local ties to Ewing Township.

When McRae was found by police in Michigan, he had a note in his pocket that indicated a threat to two Ewing Public Schools. Investigation revealed that McRae had a history of mental health issues.

As the investigation continued, and out of an abundance of caution, the Ewing Public Schools were closed for the day. Officers from Ewing and surrounding agencies were stationed at each closed public school as well as the other schools in the Township.

After further investigation, it has been determined that the incident is isolated to Michigan, and there is no threat to Ewing Schools.

Information received during our investigation indicated that McRae has not resided in the Ewing area in several years.

The Ewing Police Department would like to thank our Mercer County law enforcement partners for their quick response and assistance while the investigation was in the initial stages.

Officers will remain at all schools for the day, and it is anticipated that the normal school schedule will resume tomorrow, February 15.

On Tuesday, police identified the perpetrator of the shooting that occurred at Michigan State University.

The shooter, 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, killed three students and critically injured five others before being found dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound at 11:35 p.m.

The police stated that there was no apparent connection between the shooter and the university and did not provide a possible motive in their early morning update.

The victims who were killed and wounded were all students.

In two different locations on the vast East Lansing campus, approximately 90 miles northwest of Detroit, gunshots were fired, and students were killed.

Anthony Dwayne McRae first initiated the shooting in Berkey Hall, an academic building where two of the fatalities were discovered.

He then proceeded to shoot at the MSU Union building, which contains a student dining hall, where a third person was killed.

A survivor named Claire Papoulias recounted that the gunman entered her classroom through the rear door and began firing at the approximately 20 students present without saying a word.

When she heard three or four gunshots directly behind her head, she immediately dropped to the ground as someone shouted that there was a shooter.

“I was terrified and believed I might not make it,” she recounted to the NBC morning show, commending fellow students for courageously breaking windows to assist them in escaping.

In the midst of the violence, she phoned her mother, Natalie Papoulias, who heard three gunshots and Claire’s screams.

“It was the worst possible scenario,” her mother stated, and she felt as if her legs would buckle as she hurried to get in her car and rush to the campus.

“I feel as if she narrowly escaped death,” she added.
