It has been confirmed by BART that a person was killed when they were hit by a train on Friday afternoon at the 19th Street Station in Oakland. On Friday afternoon, the event produced significant backlogs of traffic in Downtown Oakland heading in the directions of Antioch, Berryessa, Richmond, and San Francisco.
According to BART, a motorcycle rider was involved in an accident close to the intersection of 23rd Street and Northgate Avenue, which is where the Oakland underground tunnel emerges onto an overhead track. The driver was ejected from the vehicle after colliding with a right-of-way barrier and landing on the tracks, where they were struck by an oncoming train. The crash resulted in the death of the biker.
According to a statement released by BART, “BART PD and Oakland PD are working at the scene while they investigate this horrific accident.”
At 5:28 in the evening, a limited service was resumed for trains heading in the direction of Richmond and Antioch. In addition, limited service has been restored at the Downtown Oakland station, which is accessible from all directions.
“A person has been reported to be on the tracks,” the transport agency stated in a tweet. “Police and fire personnel are responding to the incident.”
Both the Oakland Police Department and the Oakland Fire Department have arrived on the scene of the incident. BART has not provided an explanation as to why the person was on the tracks.
People are being transported by AC Transit despite the disruption in service.
