At least 13 were killed, 35 injured in a Mountain B nightclub fire in Thailand’s Chonburi province. The fire at the Mountain B night club in the Sattahip district had started at about 1am (1800 GMT Thursday) and all the victims up to now were Thai nationals.

A fire broke out early Friday morning inside a nightclub in Thailand’s eastern Chonburi province, causing at least 13 deaths and 35 injuries, a police official said.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown, and all identified victims are Thai nationals, according to authorities. Separately, the Chonburi emergency services described fourteen of the injuries as being severe.

Wuttipong Somjai, a supervisor at a local police station, told Reuters by phone that the fire at the Mountain B nightclub, which is about 180 kilometers southeast of the capital Bangkok, started around 1:00 a.m. local time.

Local TV footage showed people running away from the fire and firefighters putting out the flames and looking through the burned-out building, which was full of shoes and bottles.

A person named Nana who saw the fire said on local TV that she was there with five friends when it happened.

“I observed flames above the right half of the stage. “I believe it was at the same time that the singer on stage saw it and yelled “fire!” and threw the microphone at it,” she told PPTV. Inside the bar, I observed many bouncers coated in flames.

13 years ago, fireworks at a New Year’s party at the packed Santika nightclub in Bangkok caused a fire that killed 66 people. Investigations into that fire turned up numerous serious violations inside the club, evidence of official corruption, and old-fashioned bad safety practices at entertainment establishments.

Friday, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told the relatives of the victims that they would receive assistance from the authorities and asked entertainment venues around the nation to ensure that they had emergency exits and safety measures in place.
