According to his relatives, New York Times journalist Blake Hounshell, who was also the editor of the “On Politics” newsletter, dies by suicide. He formerly held positions at Politico and Foreign Policy, among other publications.
The news was confirmed by Hounshell’s colleagues in an email to staff.
Additionally, a message from Hounshell’s family has been made public.
“It is with great sorrow that we have to inform you that Blake has suddenly died this morning after a long and courageous battle with depression,” his family said in a brief statement. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, and two children.
Hounshell had contributed to the Monday edition of the On Politics newsletter and had been active on Twitter up until only a few hours before it was announced that he had passed away. Additionally, a narrative written by him was published on the website of the newspaper.
Before Hounshell started working for the New York Times in 2021, he was the managing editor of the Washington and Politics team at Politico, where he had worked for a combined total of almost seven years. In addition to that, he managed the editorial staff at Foreign Policy.
