A student in the ninth grade was shot on the grounds of the Suitland High School campus in District Heights, Maryland, on Thursday, according to the police and the Prince George’s County Public Schools. The school was placed on lockdown as a result of the incident.
According to the PGCPS, the lone casualty, a student, was shot during a “physical confrontation” outside the school building shortly after 10 o’clock in the morning. According to the school system, several additional pupils were present during the gunshot but managed to escape the area before it continued.
According to the Chief of Police for Prince George’s County, Malik Aziz, between 10 and 15 kids were involved in the brawl that escalated into shooting and resulted in the school being placed under lockdown.
Parents of Suitland High School students shared cell phone videos with FOX3 that show a fight between teens near the bleachers behind the school. The videos were shared on social media sites.
Then there is the sound of gunfire.
According to Aziz, the incident happened as the students were between classes. After receiving emergency care on the scene from the school resource officer who was on campus at the time of the gunshot, the victim, a 14-year-old Suitland student, was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
A second student, also 14, was taken into custody. He was still in police detention at 4 p.m. despite the fact that police have not yet identified the student as the gunman.
Aisha Braveboy, the attorney general, promised that everyone responsible would be brought to justice.
Shortly after the gunshot, the PGCPS issued a statement on Twitter claiming that there was “no danger to the surrounding community” as a result of the “isolated incident.”
Students were let out at the regular time of 3 o’clock despite the lockdown that lasted for several hours. time to get to Suitland High School. At approximately two in the afternoon, four hours after the shooting took place, parents were finally allowed back inside the facility to retrieve their children.
As they waited for the campus to come out of lockdown, those parents were worried about the safety of their children and annoyed by the lack of information they were receiving. On Thursday morning, as parents waited to pick up their children from school, a long queue of automobiles could be seen lining up in front of the building’s entrance.
Just after 11 in the morning, police from Prince George’s County were stationed outside the school, ordering people to go around and stay away from the Suitland High School grounds. Other officers, accompanied by their canine partners, were spotted searching the area next to the football field for evidence.
Around 11 o’clock in the morning, a number of students disclosed to FOX3 despite their best efforts, they were unable to enter the school on Thursday owing to the lockdown, which meant that no one could enter or leave the building.
The juvenile suspect, aged 14, has been taken into custody after the police received information from students who had observed the shooting.
Anyone who may have information is asked to call the anonymous tip line (1-866-411-TIPS) or a responsible adult. The shooting is still being looked into by the authorities.
