Officer Seara Burton of the Richmond Police Department dies of injuries
Officer Seara Burton, who had been shot in the line of duty and had been battling for her life for several weeks, has reportedly passed away, as reported by the Richmond Police Department.

Officer Seara Burton, who had been shot in the line of duty and had been battling for her life for several weeks, has reportedly passed away, as reported by the Richmond Police Department.

According to a statement released by Britt, Burton passed away at Reid Health at 9:59 p.m. surrounded by her family. According to Britt, funeral preparations are now being made, and details will be disclosed as soon as they are available.
“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the people of Richmond, as well as those who have supported Seara, her family, and the Department from a close proximity or further off. Thank you to everyone who has shown such incredible support throughout this extremely challenging time. This includes the Dayton Police Department, the Indiana State Police, the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police, the Richmond Fire Department, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, as well as many other agencies.
“The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the countless individuals who have shown their support,” During this time of great need, we respectfully request that you maintain the family’s right to privacy. ‘
After being shot during a traffic check on Thursday, September 1, life support for Burton was turned off. He later passed away. On September 3rd, Burton was moved into a facility that provides hospice care.
“Today is a sad day for everyone. Please help us honor and remember Seara as the fighter and warrior she has shown us all over the last few weeks.”
On Monday, September 19, 2022, the Richmond Police Department along with multiple other agencies will be escorting the remains of Richmond K-9 Officer Seara Burton back home from Dayton. The escort is set to leave the Dayton area at 1:30 pm.
The escort will make its way onto I-75 North from Dayton and onto I-70 West. Once the escort reaches Richmond it will follow U.S. 40 from the interstate to North 5th Street (passing Officer Burton’s police car at the city building) and then onto East Main Street and back to U.S. 40 to Doan & Mills Funeral Home located at 790 West National Road, Richmond, Indiana. Once the funeral arrangements have been finalized, they will be released.
Members of the Richmond Police Department, along with Seara’s family and friends would like to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support from the Richmond Community and beyond during these difficult times.
