Pianist Michael Ponti has passed away at the age of 84
On Monday, October 17, Michael Ponti’s son, Maximilian Ponti, spoke to the German Press Agency and stated that his father had passed away. Ponti died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. At this moment, the circumstances surrounding his passing are unknown.

The musician gained acclaim for his performances of Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces, among others. During his lifetime, he was responsible for the release of more than 80 records.

Michael Ponti was born in Germany, and studied piano in Washington D. C. with Gilmour McDonald from 1954 to 1955, who was a disciple of Leopold Godowsky. He attended DeMatha Catholic High School from 1951 to 1953. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland in 1955. He later studied with Eric Flinsch (who had in turn studied with Emil von Sauer, of whom he became an assistant) in Frankfurt from 1955 to 1961. In 1964 he won the first prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition.
In 1977 he founded his own trio (with violinist Robert Zimansky and cellist Jan Polasek).
He was known for his interpretation of works by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky: Now pianist Michael Ponti has died at the age of 84. In total, he had recorded more than 80 records.

Ponti was known for his interpretation of works by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Peter Tchaikovsky. He also made a name with numerous premiere recordings by lesser-known songwriters. Ponti recorded over 80 records.
Ponti was born as the son of an American couple in Freiburg im Breisgau. He spent his childhood and youth in the United States. As a student in Washington, he took piano lessons for ten years. In 1955 the family returned to Germany, where Ponti completed his studies at the Frankfurt Academy of Music. His career began by winning the Busoni Contest in Bozen in 1964.
