Police identified victims in Chesapeake Walmart mass shooting

The victims of the shooting that took place at Walmart on Tuesday evening in Chesapeake, Virginia, have been identified by the local police.

According to police, the victims are identified as:

• 38-year-old Brian Pendleton of Chesapeake
• 52-year-old Kellie Pyle of Chesapeake
• 43-year-old Lorenzo Gamble of Chesapeake
• 70-year-old Randy Belvins of Chesapeake
• 22-year-old Tyneka Johnson of Portsmouth
• A 16-year-old male of Chesapeake whose name and picture are being withheld due to him being a minor

Chesapeake Police confirm 7 fatalities, including the shooter, from last night’s shooting at Walmart on Sam’s Circle.

Police said that a Walmart employee from Chesapeake, Virginia opened fire inside the shop on Tuesday night, leaving at least six people dead and the gunman dead.

A family member who was setting up a monument around a tree in the Walmart parking lot verified to FOX3 that one of the victims in the shooting was identified as Tyneka Johnson, who was 21 years old.

Andre Bing, a 31-year-old resident of Chesapeake, has been named by the police as the shooter. They claimed he was carrying many magazines in addition to a single firearm and was armed.

According to the Chesapeake Police Department, when officers arrived at the store on Sam’s Circle at 10 p.m., they found three people—including Bing—dead inside the break room. Near the entrance to the business, another victim’s body was discovered.

Six people have now passed away, with three more passing away at nearby hospitals.

Two of those who died, according to hospital officials, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Three additional victims of the incident were still being treated at Sentara as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, with two being in critical condition.

Mark Solesky, the chief of police in Chesapeake, said Wednesday morning that Bing killed himself with a gun.

In order to determine whether any other injuries were self-reported, the police department says they are collaborating with local hospitals.

Walmart issued a statement confirming that Bing was currently employed by the company and held the position of team lead for the retail location.

“While details of the tragic incident in our Chesapeake, Virginia store are still emerging, authorities have confirmed multiple fatalities. We are focused on doing everything we can to support our associates and their families at this time. The alleged shooter has been identified as Andre Bing. We can confirm that he was a Walmart associate. Andre’s position with the company was overnight team lead and he’s been employed with us since 2010. We are thankful for the local first responders and will continue to work with local law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”

Before revealing the identity of the victims, the authorities are currently consulting with their families. In addition, an inquiry has been opened into the victims’ job situations at this time.

Solesky also stated that Bing’s residence was investigated.

As colleagues gathered in the break room before starting their shifts, Briana Tyler, an employee who was on the job at the time, told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that her manager “just opened the door and he just opened fire.”

According to what Tyler shared with GMA, “he just just started shooting throughout the entire break room, and I watched many individuals just drop down to the floor,” indicating that they were either trying to take cover or had been struck by gunfire.

The member of the family commented that she was the kindest person who never caused anyone trouble. “She just celebrated her 21st birthday.”

A Walmart Super Center employee named Kevin C. Harper told ABC News that he arrived at work early and chose to take a seat in the break room. He then claimed that something simply didn’t feel right, at which point he departed. He claimed to have heard three to four muffled gunshots a short while later. He claimed that he instantly ducked behind a clothes hanger.

Harper further claimed that Bing had a reputation for criticizing the work of particular staff. Harper admitted to ABC that while he never really had any issues with Bing, others did and they complained about him.

Just after one in the morning on Wednesday, Walmart posted a statement in response to the incident.

“We are shocked at this tragic event at our Chesapeake, Virginia store. We’re praying for those impacted, the community and our associates. We’re working closely with law enforcement, and we are focused on supporting our associates,” Walmart said in a tweet.

Solesky claimed that a pistol was discovered at the scene during the press briefing on Wednesday morning.

The incident at Walmart took place three days after a gunman opened fire at a gay and lesbian bar in Colorado, resulting in the deaths of five people and the injuring of 17. One week earlier, there was a shooting at the University of Virginia that resulted in the deaths of three football players and injured two more.

The following is a statement that was made by Mayor Rick West of Chesapeake:

“I am devastated by the senseless act of violence that took place late last night in our city. My prayers are with all those affected — the victims, their families, their friends and their coworkers. I am grateful for the quick actions taken by our first responders who rushed to the scene. Chesapeake is a tightknit community and we are all shaken by this news. Together, we will support each other throughout this time. Please keep us in your prayers.”

President Joe Biden also said that the country “must do more” to stop gun violence in a statement. Here is what he said in full:

“Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, one of our most cherished holidays that brings us together as Americans and as families, when we hug our loved ones and count our blessings. But because of yet another horrific and senseless act of violence, there are now even more tables across the country that will have empty seats this Thanksgiving. There are now more families who know the worst kind of loss and pain imaginable.

Jill and I grieve for those families, for the Chesapeake community, and for the Commonwealth of Virginia, which just suffered a terrible shooting at the University of Virginia this month. We also mourn for all those across America who have lost loved ones to these tragic shootings that we must come together as a nation to stand against.

This year, I signed the most significant gun reform in a generation, but that is not nearly enough. We must take greater action.

We are grateful to the first responders who mobilized to assist victims, and I have directed federal officials to provide any support and assistance needed to the people of Chesapeake.”

Solesky said that the police are still looking into the shooting, and that no clear reason has been given so far. Police said they don’t think the public is in danger anymore.

Sentara Hospital has stated that they are collaborating with the local police authorities as well as Walmart in order to “help families and our communities in every way possible.”

According to statements made by city officials, the FBI Norfolk has established a tip hotline in order to collect information pertaining to the shooting. They have requested that anyone who has information contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
