Uvalde school shooter was in school for up to an hour before law enforcement broke into room where he was barricaded and killed him

Officials confirmed Wednesday that the gunman who killed 19 pupils and two teachers at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday was on the campus for up to an hour before police enforcement forced entered a classroom and killed him.

At a news conference, Texas Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw told CNN’s Ed Lavandera, “It will be within 40 minutes or so, within an hour.”

Rep. Tony Gonzales, whose district contains Uvalde, told CNN’s Jake Tapper, citing a briefing, that the 18-year-old shooter, Salvador Ramos, was in a standoff with law enforcement agents for approximately a half-hour after opening fire on kids and teachers.

“The shooting then ceases, and he seals himself inside. At this point, there is a pause in the action “Gonzales said. “As far as I’m aware, the entire event lasted roughly an hour, but there’s a 30-minute break here. They feel as though they have him surrounded. The remaining children are now exiting the school.”

Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol Raul Ortiz told CNN that agents responded at the site after police officers engaged the suspect in a confrontation at the school. Several members of the Border Patrol tactical squad, a search and rescue responder, and a few additional agents teamed up with local authorities to pursue the gunman.

“They showed no hesitation. They developed a plan. They immediately addressed the situation upon entering the classroom “Ortiz told.

Since 2012, when 26 children and adults were slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School, this was the second-deadliest shooting at a K-12 school in the United States. CNN’s analysis indicates that it was at least the 30th shooting at a K-12 school in 2022.

The shooter was a local high school dropout with no known criminal or mental health history, according to officials. For his 18th birthday, he legally purchased two AR-15-style firearms and ammunition. His grandfather stated on Wednesday that he was unaware Ramos possessed firearms.

Rolando Reyes said, “If I had known, I would have told someone about him.”
