An emergency alert was issued by the Ontario Provincial Police on Tuesday afternoon, advising residents of Wiikwemkong to remain in their homes due to the presence of a “armed and dangerous person.”
“In Wiikwemkong, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are conducting an investigation into a person who is armed and dangerous. The police ask that you remain at your location, secure all doors and windows, and report anyone who appears to be acting suspiciously to them “According to the police, about noon
The OPP has stated that it is looking for a guy named Luke Naokeegijig, who is 39 years old and has been described as having brown eyes, a mustache, long black hair, and a height of six feet one inch (185 centimeters).
An emergency warning from the OPP suggested that he might be wearing a pullover with a camouflage pattern and black jeans.
In a social media post, the First Nation stated that Police Chief Scott Cooper has been in contact with Ogimaa (Chief) Rachel Manitowabi, who stated that the suspect is “not a threat to the general public; however, with the safety of everyone in mind, the community has been advised to shelter in place.”
This occurred approximately one hour after a First Nation school board on Manitoulin Island announced that all of its schools are under a “hold and secure” status Tuesday morning, under the advise of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service.
Just before 11 o’clock in the morning, the Wiikwemikong Board of Education took to social media and issued a message explaining that the move is being taken “out of an abundance of caution.”
The ‘hold and secure’ strategy, which stops unauthorized individuals from accessing or exiting a facility, is frequently implemented in educational institutions in the case that there is a risk or threat in the surrounding environment.
