Steven Sheangshang facing several charges, including murder of Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley

Tragically, a deputy from Scott County lost his life while on duty on Monday. The Fayette County Detention Center has now identified the individual accused of murdering him.

According to authorities, Deputy Caleb Conley, 35 years old, was fatally shot during a traffic stop on I-75 at mile marker 127.

Steven Sheangshang, 45, is currently facing multiple charges, as stated in his arrest citation. These charges include murder of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, burglary, theft by unlawful taking of an automobile, wanton endangerment in the first degree, and fleeing or evading police in the first degree.

After a shooting incident on Georgetown Road, Sheangshang was apprehended by the police on Monday evening. According to the citation, Sheangshang is accused of shooting Deputy Conley during a traffic stop on I-75 and subsequently fleeing to River Run Court in Georgetown.

It is alleged that he attempted to secure transportation by forcefully entering a residence, brandishing a handgun at one of the occupants, and coercing him into surrendering the keys to his vehicle.

After leaving the residence in the stolen vehicle, Sheangshang reportedly headed towards Lexington. According to the citation, it is alleged that he then shot another individual at a residence on Georgetown Road before stealing the victim’s vehicle at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Monday. Sheangshang was apprehended at a residence on Charles Avenue at 6:41 p.m. on Monday, and during the arrest, a .44 magnum revolver was discovered at the premises.

Deputy Conley, who had served in the US Army for eight years and been a member of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for four years, is survived by his wife and young children. His tragic death marks the first loss of an officer within the Scott County Sheriff’s Department.

However, within Scott County as a whole, the Georgetown Police Department has mourned the loss of three officers who died while on duty.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office shared a statement on Facebook regarding the incident.
