Toledo, OH (January 25, 2023): On January 25, 2023, Toledo Police officers responded to 5740 Hill Avenue in reference to a man discharging a firearm and possibly shooting his wife. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the male suspect outside of the residence who was still armed with a firearm. The suspect was eventually shot by Toledo Police officers, and pronounced deceased on scene.

At approximately 12:33 AM, Lucas County Dispatch received a call from a female reporting that her husband was shooting a gun, and that she may have possibly been shot. While speaking with the female, the call taker could hear shooting and screaming in the background.

While officers were still en route, the caller and her adult son escaped to the roof of the residence. The caller further advised that her husband was having a mental break down, and was still armed.

When officers arrived on scene, contact was made with the suspect who was now outside the location, and armed with what was later determined to be a shotgun. As additional crews arrived on scene, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation; however, the suspect refused to comply with verbal commands to drop the gun.

The suspect eventually began walking towards officers, raised, and then pointed the shotgun at them. The suspect was then shot by officers. An officer who is a Tactical Medic Team member immediately began rendering lifesaving aid as Toledo Fire and Rescue personnel arrived.

The suspect was eventually pronounced deceased on scene. The suspect’s name will be released at a later time. There was no one else injured during the incident.

The Toledo Police officers who fired their weapons will be placed on paid Administrative Leave per collective bargaining agreements. As the case continues to be investigated, additional information will be forthcoming.

The involved officers’ information and body-worn camera footage will be released at a news conference in the near future, date and time to be determined.
