Suspect in custody after barricaded himself in a hotel room of the Roadside Inn in Surfside
Police activity closes portion of Highway 17 Business near Surfside Beach

UPDATE 3:15 a.m.:
The incident has resolved.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will be taking over the investigation, per standard protocols for incidents of this nature.
One HCPD officer sustained minor injuries from shrapnel at the beginning of the incident. That officer has already been discharged from an area hospital.
No further information is currently available.

There was an exchange of gunfire approximately 30 minutes ago.
HCPD officers continue to work the investigation.
Highway 17 Business/South Kings Highway remains closed to all traffic near 17th Avenue North.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Officers continue to attempt to deescalate and safely resolve the incident.
SWAT team members are employing special tactics to do so.
Community members may hear occasional loud noises.

HCPD continues to work a barricaded person incident near 17th Avenue North outside of Surfside Beach.
The subject fired a weapon earlier in the incident.
Officers are working to deescalate the subject/incident.
There is no risk to the community at this time.

We are aware of a community member live-streaming SWAT activities in this investigation.
Just as you may be watching, it is possible the barricaded subject is watching.

Horry County Fire Rescue, South Carolina Highway Patrol, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Myrtle Beach Police Department, Surfside Beach Police Department, and others are assisting.
