On Wednesday afternoon, a shooting occurred in Miami’s Buena Vista neighborhood, injuring a Miami-Dade police officer. According to multiple law enforcement sources who spoke with FOX3 on Thursday, the suspected gunman is Steve Gallon IV, the son of Miami-Dade School Board member Steve Gallon III.
The incident took place at around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Northwest 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
Although the officer’s identity hasn’t been disclosed, sources reported that the officer was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.
According to authorities, the injured officer was a narcotics detective and had been with the department for 18 years.
The officer was trying to apprehend someone when the attacker unexpectedly approached from behind and grazed him with a bullet at the back of his head.
After receiving medical care, the officer has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recuperating at home, as per police reports.
The individual initially being arrested was taken into custody, and Miami-Dade police officers were dispatched to establish a perimeter in search of the other suspect.
Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez confirmed on Thursday that the suspected shooter has been arrested by the authorities.
On Thursday morning, cameras recorded the site where the suspect was discovered, located in the vicinity of Northwest 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
Prior to the officer’s release, several law enforcement personnel from various agencies had gathered outside the hospital on Wednesday evening.
In the past year, four Miami-Dade Police Department officers have been shot, with Detective Cesar Echy Echaverry tragically losing his life.
“I am exhausted from being here at the hospital four times already for officers getting shot and injured,” Ramirez stated, emphasizing the necessity to put an end to these incidents.
