According to a news release issued by Indiana State University, three students from the university were killed in a horrific collision involving a single vehicle early on Sunday morning.
According to the statement made by the university, there were five passengers inside the vehicle, all of them are thought to be students at ISU. Among them were “many football players.”
“This is a terrible tragedy,” ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said. “As we are waiting on additional details from authorities investigating this accident, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the students involved.”
Police were working to identify the three who died.
Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Riley, Indiana.
The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. It was on fire when deputies arrived.
Two passengers were able to be freed from the vehicle and were being treated for serious injuries, Plasse said.
The driver and two other passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Riley is about 10 miles from the university’s Terre Haute campus.
