Pentagon releases selfie taken by US pilot showing Chinese spy balloon in air
A selfie taken in the cockpit of a U-2 spy plane, while an airman was flying above the Chinese surveillance balloon, which was shot down by the US military earlier this month, has been released by the US Defense Department.
The pilot took the selfie, which shows the shadow of the aircraft on the balloon, along with a clear image of the balloon’s payload, as it was crossing the continental United States.
CNN initially reported the existence of the selfie. The US military first spotted the balloon on January 28, and it was shot down off the coast of South Carolina after crossing the country.
A senior State Department official revealed earlier this month that fly-bys had indicated the balloon’s capability of conducting signals intelligence collection operations.
